The “Defend and DestROI” dive tournament was created to protect and preserve Hawaii’s reefs and native fish from invasive species such as Ta’ape, To’au, and Hawaii’s most threatening fish, the Roi.
Since being introduced to Hawaii in 1956 from Mo’orea, the Roi has overpopulated the reefs and preyed on the juvenile native fish species. One adult Roi can consume upwards of 140 native fish per year.
In addition to destroying our reef and native species, Roi can cause serious illness in people who consume it. Roi is also one of the known carriers of ciguatera, a toxin produced by dinoflagellates that attacks the human nervous system and can result in serious side effects.
Roi, Ta’ape, and To’au are damaging Hawaii’s already compromised reef ecosystem and the community must work together to control their population explosion so that the fish and reefs can be safeguarded can.
The purpose of this event is to work with divers and fishermen to eradicate as many as these invasives as possible so the native Hawaiian species can thrive and flourish for generations to come.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Honolulu.
